Use the Minecraft Banner Maker to design a custom banner before building it in-game. Choose a base color, add patterns, change their colors, and rearrange the layers until the banner matches the design you want. Minecraft banners are tall decorative blocks that can display multiple colored patterns. Players commonly use them for base entrances, faction symbols, castle flags, shop signs, event decorations, team colors, and server branding. Combining simple shapes across several layers can produce anything from a clean logo to a detailed medieval-style flag.
Pattern order matters because every new pattern is placed over the layers beneath it. A border added near the end, for example, appears above earlier stripes, gradients, or symbols. When recreating a specific image, start with the largest background shapes and add smaller details afterward.
After finishing your design, copy the command generated by the banner maker. Open Minecraft, enter a world with commands enabled, and paste the command into the chat window. Press Enter to add the custom banner to your inventory.
On multiplayer servers, you will need permission to use commands. Server owners and administrators can also run the generated command through the server console or a command block. Make sure the command was generated for the Minecraft edition and version used by your world, since command formatting can differ between versions.
Banners can be placed standing on top of solid blocks or attached to the side of blocks as wall banners. Their small footprint makes them useful in builds where a full block would take up too much space.
The most recognizable banners usually use a limited color palette and a clear central shape. Too many similar colors or overlapping details can make a design difficult to read from a distance.
Each banner begins with a solid base color. Additional patterns are then layered over that base using different dyes. Common options include stripes, crosses, borders, gradients, halves, triangles, circles, and other shapes. Some special patterns may require a banner pattern item when created normally in survival mode.
The banner maker handles the layer order visually and generates the completed item command for you. This is especially useful for complex banners that would otherwise require several crafting steps or repeated use of a loom.
Many designs can be recreated in survival mode with a banner, dyes, and a loom. Add each pattern in the same order shown by the generator. However, commands are usually the fastest option for testing designs, creative worlds, server builds, or banners with many layers.
A completed banner can generally be duplicated by combining it with a blank banner that uses the same base color. This is useful when you need matching flags for a large base, server event, faction headquarters, or team arena. Keep one original banner stored safely so you can produce more copies later.
